The 2001 Star B Q, an event sponsored by the Alachua Astronomy Club and Mike and Heidi Toomey was the event that inspired me to combine my two life long loves – art and astronomy.
I am inspired by the constant flow of creative force and energy that exists in the cosmos. Stars supernova, explode and break everything down again into the most basic of elements only to eventually, over vast distances and time, swirl together again to create new stars, new earths, new civilizations. Then the process starts all over again. As an artist, I cannot imagine a richer, deeper or more rewarding source for inspiration and contemplation. It is said that space art is landscape not of the earth. If earth is nothing more than a grain of sand in all the cosmos, what an infinitely rich resource that is!
Collage
Of all the mediums that I like to work with, collage is perhaps the most fun and has the greatest potential for creativity. For me, it also lends itself well to being worked on intermittently, sporadically or from memory.
I usually work on astronomical themes, my inspiration coming from my experiences as an amateur astronomer at various astronomy themed events.
I have a large box in my studio where the flotsam and jetsam of life has drifted to. I am forever catching people before they throw something away, “Put it in the Box”, I say!
