I have always been inspired to paint the landscape. I was born in Florida, and have lived there most of my life, so I’ve always been blessed to be surrounded and inspired by some of the most beautiful and diverse scenery that our planet has to offer. Scenery that is changing faster in our generation than in any other time in history. I feel compelled to paint those places that may be lost forever.
I usually paint in the “plein air“(open air) style, made popular by the French Impressionists. Paintings are occasionally finished “a la prima” (in one session). I prefer a purist’s approach, using an old fashioned wood French easel and hand held wood palette with oil paints, painting on canvas or wood panels, using brushes and painting knives. It suits me well. Sometimes paintings will go back to the site another day for further work or back to the studio for a new direction.
I love to paint water themes and am drawn by the ethereal and mysterious springs of Florida, their number and magnitude unique to the world. I have visited and documented hundreds of them over a period of thirty years. Their beauty is unmatched and the seemingly never ending flow of water is mesmerizing. These are indeed magical and sacred places and their conservation is critical to our survival.
I will often combine both earthly and heavenly images in visionary landscapes. I also enjoy accepting and painting commissions of other people’s treasured places.
